Technology Leads While S&P 500 Advances

Nonfarm Payrolls for October landed Friday morning, and the market spent the rest of the session deciding what to do with it. The release came after a week in which stocks had already whipsawed on midterm election results and growing anxiety over AI financing. By the close, Technology and Communication Services led the sector table, while the Dow Jones lagged the rest of the market and finished in the red.

The split reaction suggests traders were picking their spots rather than buying everything across the board. Bitcoin and Ethereum were both a touch lower at the time of our snapshot, essentially treading water while equities absorbed the jobs number. Small caps joined the advance, with the Russell 2000 higher alongside the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500, even as the Dow broke from the pack.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both closed higher, with the Nasdaq's gain outpacing the broader market as growth names reasserted themselves. The Dow broke from that pattern and finished lower.

Technology topped the sector table by a wide margin, coming after a rough stretch that had investors second-guessing the AI trade. Consumer Staples fell to the bottom of the list. CNBC's weekly outlook piece noted that retail traders had been piling into defensive sectors such as healthcare and consumer staples earlier in the week, making even the safety trades look overbought, though the source does not establish a direct link to today's sector moves.

Financials, Real Estate and Materials also finished lower, rounding out a session led by technology and communication services.

The October jobs report was the only scheduled release on today's calendar. Our sources do not include the reported figures, so the specific readings are not something we can confirm here. What the sector table does show is that growth-sensitive groups like technology and communication services led, while staples sat at the bottom.

CNBC also noted that the path for monetary policy remains in focus after Friday's data, as markets work through what the release may mean for the central bank's next steps.

Looking Ahead

CNBC's outlook piece for the week of November 9 through 13 described a market that may still see more turbulence before it finds a durable bottom, after a week of sharp swings tied to the midterm elections and AI financing worries. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, told CNBC he's watching for the CBOE Volatility Index to climb further before he can say there's a real flush in sentiment, and said the selling could continue for a few more days, maybe another week, before a bottom. Reuters reported that US inflation data is on the calendar next week, arriving as the tech sector works through its recent swoon.

Credit markets remain part of the story too. CNBC reported that CoreWeave's borrowing costs have climbed sharply, with the yield on its 2032 bond moving higher and its credit default swaps widening this week, and that default-insurance costs on debt from companies including Nvidia, Broadcom and Amazon have risen over the past month, though those spreads remain low on an absolute basis. CNBC described rising CDS as a sign that markets want more protection against default even among the largest and healthiest debt issuers.

CNBC noted that none of this means AI debt financing is collapsing, but it's the kind of detail that could keep semiconductor and data center names volatile into next week. Traders heading into Monday will likely watch whether today's move back into tech holds, or whether the defensive bid that dominated earlier in the week returns.
