Communication Services Leads While S&P 500 Slips

Health Care sold off hard on Thursday, and the damage said as much about the day's mood as the tech carnage that dominated headlines. While Technology took the brunt of the selling, Health Care's decline stood out because it's supposed to be a place investors hide when the market turns ugly.

Instead it fell far harder than its fellow defensive sectors, a sign that Thursday's selling wasn't selective. It was broad, fast, and indiscriminate.

The session marked a sharp reversal from Wednesday's postelection rally. CNBC reported that stocks plummeted Thursday, erasing the gains from the midterm election bounce as investors pulled back from technology names on fears that the data-center buildout could slow. The Nasdaq Composite dropped into correction territory, trading well below its record set last month, according to CNBC.

The Russell 2000 also fell into a correction. The S&P 500 was tracking toward its worst day since April 2025, per the same report, while the Dow Jones gave back nearly all of Wednesday's historic advance.

What started as an AI-stock problem didn't stay contained. CNBC quoted Truist Wealth's Keith Lerner saying the selloff in tech "is now feeding itself into the broader market," and that "the rubber band is becoming increasingly stretched." Industrial and financial names got pulled down with the chip stocks, and by late in the session almost nothing was green.

Every major index was sharply lower, with the Nasdaq and Russell 2000 both sliding into correction territory in the same session. Crypto didn't offer refuge either. Bitcoin and Ethereum both showed steep losses at the time of the snapshot, trading in step with the broader risk-off mood rather than acting as a hedge against it.

Technology was the day's clear worst performer, and it wasn't close. CNBC reported that Nvidia and Broadcom each fell sharply, Oracle dropped as well, and the iShares Semiconductor ETF was on pace for its worst day since the Covid-19 breakout of March 2020.

Qualcomm sank after issuing a disappointing earnings forecast despite beating on headline numbers, CNBC noted, with CEO Cristiano Amon telling the network "we don't have a demand issue, it's a supply issue."

Neocloud names took an even harder hit. Seeking Alpha reported Nebius Group dropped sharply as the Nasdaq-tracking QQQ declined, and CNBC said CoreWeave tumbled for a second straight session.

The sell-off traced back to Tuesday's midterm results. CNBC reported that the states with the most ambitious AI data-center plans turned blue, and that investors are now weighing whether a Democratic sweep in Congress and several governorships could slow the AI infrastructure buildout that's underpinned the market for years.

Orion's Tim Holland told CNBC that investors are "stepping away until they get a better sense of the implications of the midterms around the AI capex cycle." MarketWatch added that Bloom Energy got swept into the selling as fears mounted over potential data-center delays.

Against that backdrop, Health Care's decline reads differently than the rest of the board. Communication Services, Utilities, and Consumer Staples all lost less than a full percentage point, behaving closer to how defensive sectors tend to behave on a rough day.

Health Care didn't get that treatment. It fell well beyond its defensive peers and traded more in line with cyclical sectors like Energy and Financials, which suggests investors may have treated health names as exposed risk rather than shelter.

Real Estate also slipped more than the true defensives but still held up better than Health Care, pointing to a market that was rotating out of almost everything except the narrowest pocket of staples and utilities names.

Industrials and Consumer Discretionary rounded out the laggards behind Technology, consistent with CNBC's report that the selling spread into names like Caterpillar, JPMorgan, Boeing, and Nike as the session wore on. Energy, Financials, and Materials all posted similar-sized declines, forming a middle tier of sectors that got caught in the broader downdraft without being the market's primary target.

Friday's October jobs report lands into a market that's already on edge. MarketWatch framed the release as a potential swing factor, noting that after a tech-led meltdown, the data "could bring investors some encouraging news, or add to their misery." A soft print could revive worries about growth just as the AI-capex story is being questioned, while a strong one might feed concerns about how long rates stay elevated.

Beyond the jobs number, traders will be watching whether Thursday's damage in chips and neoclouds stabilizes or extends into a third day. MarketWatch reported that some portfolio managers still see chip demand holding up even through political uncertainty, framing Nvidia's slide toward a bear market as a possible buying opportunity for investors willing to look past the headlines. Whether that view wins out, or whether the selling that hit Health Care and Technology alike spreads further, is an open question heading into Friday's session.
