IREN disclosed that more than $4 billion in annualized recurring revenue originally projected to begin landing in 2026 has been pushed out to at least January, and potentially February, as the company works through a customer-requested change and supplier timing issues, according to CNBC. On an analyst call, IREN co-CEO Daniel Roberts identified the customer behind the delay as Microsoft, and said the company remains fully contracted and funded despite the slip in timing.
What Caused the Delay
Roberts told analysts that Microsoft requested a reconfiguration and upgrade of network infrastructure to support 200 megawatts of capacity intended to service the latest generation of frontier AI models. "They made a request to reconfigure and upgrade some of the network infrastructure and the purpose of that was really to enable the 200 megawatts of capacity to service these latest generation frontier models," Roberts said, per CNBC. IREN attributed the broader delay to a combination of that customer-requested change and separate supplier timing issues, which together could extend the payment timeline into February.
Despite the slip, IREN said the $4 billion ARR target itself remains fully contracted and funded, framing the issue as one of deployment timing rather than lost revenue commitments, according to the company's statement reported by CNBC. The company also said its revenue backlog increased 22% from the prior period to $20.3 billion, with approximately two-thirds held by investment-grade counterparties.
Timing Versus Revenue Recognition
The distinction between contracted ARR and recognized revenue matters here. As Yahoo Finance reported, ARR is a company-defined operating metric rather than a U.S. GAAP measure, and recognized revenue may be materially lower than the ARR figure the company cites. That caveat is not specific to this delay; it applies to IREN's ARR disclosures generally. Read as an interpretation of those reported figures, it means the timing of the $4 billion target says little on its own about how much of that amount will ultimately appear as GAAP revenue.
Market Reaction Amid a Broader AI Selloff

IREN shares rose in extended trading following the disclosure, even though the stock remained down 55% over the preceding month, per CNBC's reporting. That move came against the backdrop of a difficult session for AI-linked equities: CNBC reported that the Nasdaq posted its worst day on Thursday since April 2025, and that IREN is being closely watched by investors as the AI trade shows signs of unwinding, particularly following the Democratic sweep in Tuesday's midterm elections. IREN had already seen a 26% post-election plunge in its stock price heading into the earnings report, according to CNBC.
The pressure was not isolated to IREN. CNBC reported that neocloud peer CoreWeave, set to report earnings the following Tuesday, had plunged 60% over the past month, while Nebius, reporting the following Thursday, was down 48% over the same stretch. Based on those two figures, CoreWeave's monthly decline exceeded Nebius's by 12 percentage points (60 minus 48), a gap equal to roughly 25% in relative terms (12 divided by 48, multiplied by 100). This is our calculation from the reported figures and is presented only as an arithmetic comparison of those two data points, not as a forecast or an implied causal link between the two stocks.
Quarterly Results and Spending Plans
The disclosure came alongside IREN's quarterly results. Revenue climbed 66% from the prior quarter to $228 million, beating the $221 million average analyst estimate compiled by LSEG, according to CNBC. AI Cloud revenue more than doubled to $200 million, and the company's net loss narrowed to $263 million from $684 million in the prior period. IREN also said it plans to spend $15 billion in capital expenditures for the remainder of the fiscal year, split between $9 billion in cash and committed financing and $6 billion in "target" financing that the company described as subject to market conditions.
A More Selective Capital Market
Roberts told analysts that "capital markets have become more selective in the last few weeks, and the questions have undoubtedly moved from how big the contract is to whether it can be delivered, financed, and run at a profit," according to CNBC's account of the earnings call. Separately, Roberts told CNBC's Seema Mody that "there is a disconnect between what we're seeing in public market and what we're seeing at the customer level." IREN said it currently holds contracts with Nvidia, Microsoft, and 13 other customers.
Bottom Line
IREN's core message, as relayed by CNBC, is that the $4 billion ARR delay reflects a Microsoft-driven network upgrade and supplier timing rather than any change to the underlying contracted and funded revenue base, and the company's backlog grew alongside the disclosure. At the same time, the gap between non-GAAP ARR and GAAP revenue recognition, highlighted separately by Yahoo Finance, remains a standing caveat for investors assessing how quickly that backlog converts into reported earnings. The stock's rebound in after-hours trading came against a backdrop of a sharp, sector-wide AI selloff that also hit peers CoreWeave and Nebius ahead of their own upcoming earnings reports.
