Apple used the first product keynote of John Ternus's tenure as chief executive to introduce the company's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, according to CNBC and ABC7. The Sept. 9 event at Apple Park, titled "Surprise and Shine," notably omitted a standard, non-Pro iPhone 18 from the fall lineup, a shift CNBC described as the biggest change to Apple's release cadence in seven years.
Prices, storage and ship dates
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the 18 Pro Max at $1,299, each $100 more than last year's iPhone 17 Pro models, according to CNBC's live coverage. CNBC reported that the increases came amid a global component shortage, especially for memory. Preorders for the 18 Pro and Pro Max open Saturday, Sept. 12, with the phones shipping Sept. 18, per ABC7 and CNBC.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and comes in storage configurations from 256 GB to 2 TB, according to Fox Business. It goes on sale Oct. 23, roughly five weeks after the Pro models ship. CNBC reported that the $1,999 starting price was "in line with competitors and lower than much of what Wall Street was expecting." CNBC also reported that the iPhone 17, which cost $799 before the event, was listed at $899 afterward; CNBC did not give a reason for the change.
A cadence shift, seven years in the making

Since the iPhone 11 generation, Apple had announced its Pro and standard phones at the same fall event with identical release dates, CNBC reported. This year's event broke that pattern: no non-Pro iPhone 18 appeared on stage. CNBC said analysts have largely expected Apple to release its mainline iPhone at a separate spring event instead, a practice previously used for lower-cost models like the iPhone SE and iPhone 16e. Citing Economic Daily News, Yahoo Finance's report on enthusiast site MacRumors said Apple could launch the base iPhone 18 early next year alongside an iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air.
Analysts offered competing explanations for the split. IDC vice president Francisco Jeronimo told CNBC the move could smooth Apple's revenue across the year: "When Apple puts all the focus on the last quarter of the year, of course that generates quite strong revenues, but they were missing when the second quarter comes along with much lower sales... I think this will give them some stability in terms of balancing the revenues throughout the year." Counterpoint Research's Neil Shah told CNBC that launching two new models instead of four eases supply-chain pressure, adding, "High memory pricing is not helping Apple launch multiple iPhones at the same time."
Not every analyst framed the shift as unambiguously positive. Bank of America's Wamsi Mohan wrote, per CNBC, that "the split launch could support mix and ASPs," but cautioned it "creates some risk that price-sensitive consumers defer upgrades until the lower-priced models arrive." IDC data cited by CNBC show the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max represented 54% of iPhone sales in the first half of 2026, versus 26% for the regular iPhone 17 — a 28-percentage-point gap (54 − 26, our calculation from the IDC figures CNBC cited). Read as interpretation, that mix shows Apple's priciest models already accounting for the largest slice of its iPhone sales, the backdrop for Mohan's point about pricing and average selling prices.
Inside the Duo
Ternus described the rationale for a foldable design directly: "For a device that plays such a central role in your life, a larger display would open up entirely new possibilities... We think the best way to achieve that is with a foldable design," he said, according to CNBC, adding that other foldables feel like "two phones awkwardly stuck together." He said the Duo "gives you the largest display ever on an iPhone while still fitting easily in your pocket," calling it a reflection of "extraordinarily complex engineering," per Fox Business.
The Duo's inner display measures 7.6 inches, according to CNBC, and ABC7 reported the opened display is 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro's screen. Apple marketing chief Greg Joswiak said the outer display covers 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro's screen area, according to CNBC. The device has a titanium case, per CNBC. Touch ID returns via a fingerprint sensor built into the side button, and the phone carries dual 48MP main and ultra-wide cameras, per Fox Business, which also reported Apple's claim that the Duo is the thinnest iPhone design to date. Software chief Craig Federighi said Apple redesigned much of iOS for the dual screens, enabling two-app multitasking and, for the first time on iPhone, Apple Pencil support: "We looked at every aspect of iOS to see how we could make it even more useful on iPhone Duo," he said, per CNBC.
Shares wobble, analysts split on foldable demand
Apple shares opened at $315.49 on the day of the event and briefly popped to $318 before they "quickly dropped," according to CNBC's live blog, which did not specify how far the stock fell; that $318 level sat $2.51, or about 0.8%, above the open (our calculation from CNBC's reported figures). Ahead of the event, KeyBanc Capital Markets, one of the few firms tracked by FactSet with a sell rating on Apple, wrote that the launch was "likely a negative catalyst for shares," reasoning that large price increases would hurt volumes while minimal changes would sharpen investor focus on gross margins, per CNBC.
JPMorgan's Samik Chatterjee wrote, as reported by CNBC, that the foldable "will be less influential on unit outcomes, but more so drive investor confidence in the company's ability to stand up and deliver success with a new premium device." Analysts widely expect lower sales volumes for the Duo than for Apple's traditional iPhones, CNBC reported. Forrester's Dipanjan Chatterjee told ABC7 the launch fits "straight out of Apple's playbook: Wait for the product to work out its kinks and for the market to offer glimpses of viability, then enter and shape the category," while noting foldables still represent "a minuscule share of the smartphone market." IDC data cited by CNBC put foldables at about 2.2% of global smartphone unit shipments so far this year, with Huawei controlling nearly 80% of the category in China; Huawei and Xiaomi both unveiled new foldables the day before Apple's event.
Siri revamp and China/EU limits
Apple showed a rebuilt, Apple Intelligence-powered Siri that it says can take action inside more than 300,000 apps, including third-party apps, according to CNBC. Fox Business reported that the new Siri leverages underlying technology from Google Gemini's models. Separately, Apple's new Apple Reference Image feature, which signs photo data at the sensor at the moment of capture to help verify that an image was not AI-generated, will not be available in the European Union or China, per CNBC; Fox Business described the feature as creating an unalterable reference image that lives alongside any edited version.
Bottom Line
Ternus's debut keynote paired a long-anticipated foldable with a structural change to how Apple sequences its iPhone lineup — moves that arrive, per CNBC, amid a global component shortage, particularly in memory, which Counterpoint Research's Neil Shah said is "not helping Apple launch multiple iPhones at the same time." The $1,999 Duo price came in below much of what Wall Street was expecting, per CNBC, but analysts remain divided on whether the spring-launch shift for standard models will support mix and average selling prices, as Bank of America's Mohan suggested, or risk delaying upgrades among price-sensitive buyers, as he also cautioned. With foldables at about 2.2% of global smartphone unit shipments so far this year, according to IDC data cited by CNBC, the near-term test flagged by Forrester will be whether Apple can expand that niche into a meaningful new segment.
