Technology Leads While S&P 500 Advances

Technology stocks staged a sharp comeback on Monday, finishing at the top of the sector table as traders rotated back into the group that has taken the brunt of October's selloff. The move stood in contrast to Communication Services, which finished at the bottom of the table with the day's steepest decline. Most sectors advanced, but the gap between the leader and the laggard pointed to money moving from one corner of the market to another.

The rotation story has been building for weeks. CNBC reported that a Goldman Sachs index tracking the S&P 500 without "AI enabler" stocks pulled roughly even with the traditional S&P 500 after briefly edging ahead of it, with investors having soured on debt and equity issued by companies like CoreWeave and Oracle. Monday's action looked like the AI trade clawing some of that ground back, even as money kept rotating toward sectors that held up better during the recent tech wobble.

All four major indexes were higher in the late-session snapshot, with the Nasdaq Composite posting the largest percentage gain alongside the Technology rebound. The Russell 2000 also advanced, a sign that the gains were not confined purely to mega-cap names.

Crypto didn't get the memo, though. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum slipped on the day, a reminder that digital assets aren't always moving in lockstep with equities even on a risk-on session.

The Technology sector's outperformance lines up with the broader AI-trade bounce CNBC described, with chipmakers and cloud names recovering some of the ground lost during October's drawdown. Industrials and Consumer Discretionary rode the same wave of risk appetite, while Communication Services dragged at the bottom of the table.

That weakness tracks with MarketWatch's report that Meta is looking to raise a substantial sum through stock-related deals stretching into early next year, a capital-raising plan that follows the heavy capex commitments CNBC said preceded a sharp drop in Meta shares last week. Traders may still be uneasy about how much Meta and its peers are spending to build out AI infrastructure, and that unease is one possible explanation for the sector's spot at the bottom of the table.

Consumer Staples and Health Care also finished in the red, though both losses were modest. Staples had been one of the defensive beneficiaries of the AI unwind over the past month, so a small pullback there would fit with money flowing back toward growth names on a day when risk appetite firmed. Utilities barely budged, essentially flat on the session, which could also fit with a defensive-to-offensive rotation where the "safe" trades took a breather while Technology did the heavy lifting.

The rotation CNBC described goes beyond a single day's sector table. The outlet noted that Oppenheimer technical analyst Ari Wald said in an Oct. 24 note that the "AI pendulum has swung back in favor of non-AI exposure over the last two weeks," a stance that accompanied the firm's upgrade of commercial services and insurance to overweight, with recommendations including Republic Services, Cintas, Verisk Analytics, Broadridge Financial Solutions, MetLife and Arthur J. Gallagher.

Berkshire Hathaway's Class B shares have also been a beneficiary of the shift away from concentrated tech exposure, up this month even though the stock still trails the S&P 500 for the year overall. Warren Buffett's conglomerate owns operating companies including Geico and Burlington Northern Santa Fe alongside a large public equity portfolio that includes Apple, Coca-Cola, Alphabet and Bank of America, and CNBC noted that diversification may help Berkshire continue to outperform if tech drags on the S&P 500.

Energy's modest gain fit into a separate storyline. CNBC linked some of the sector's strength this month to the war in Iran rather than to the AI rotation directly, and Reuters reported that the IEA's Birol does not expect energy markets to return to pre-war levels in 2027. That's a geopolitical thread running alongside the domestic sector-rotation story, and it's one worth watching separately from the Technology-versus-Communication Services split that defined Monday's tape.

Overseas, Reuters reported that Indian shares snapped a losing streak as investors there assessed earnings, while Brazilian stocks and the real tumbled as a Lula win shifted investor focus. Neither move directly drove U.S. trading, but they're a reminder that the rotation playing out in American sector tables has company abroad, even if the drivers differ market to market.

Sentiment readings backed up the day's tone. The Fear & Greed Index sat in territory consistent with a risk-on mood, and retail trading forum mentions were active with a roughly neutral tilt rather than one-sided panic or euphoria. That's roughly what you'd expect on a day when the market rotated rather than ran in one direction across the board.

Looking Ahead

No confirmed next-day economic releases or scheduled events were available at the time of this report. Traders will likely keep watching whether Technology's bounce has staying power or whether it was a one-day reprieve inside a longer AI-trade unwind.

Communication Services bears particular attention given Meta's capital-raising plans and the broader skepticism CNBC described around AI-linked capex. Another session of Technology strength against Communication Services weakness would reinforce today's rotation story, while a reversal would suggest Monday was more of a bounce than a trend change.

Either way, the tug-of-war between AI-heavy names and the rest of the market remains a meaningful theme for the sessions ahead, and it's one that could keep shaping sector performance regardless of which way the headline indexes move.
