Volkswagen cut its 2026 profit guidance, according to a Seeking Alpha Market News report published September 18, which cited persistently weak sales in China, headwinds from underperforming brands, and a goodwill impairment charge tied to Porsche AG. The report also linked the reset to restructuring charges and slower-than-expected battery-electric-vehicle adoption. The published excerpt of that report breaks off before giving the new figure, stating only that "Return on sales is now expected to be," so the revised margin target and the size of the Porsche goodwill charge are not specified. Seeking Alpha is the only outlet cited for this September update, and Volkswagen has not directly confirmed the details in the material cited here.

A Guidance Trail That Started in July

The September move follows an earlier revenue-guidance downgrade at Volkswagen's July 24 half-year report. At that time, according to Yahoo Finance and the Global Banking & Finance Review, Volkswagen cut its 2026 revenue outlook to flat or down as much as 3%, from a prior forecast of flat to 3% growth. The company held its operating-margin target at 4% to 5.5% in July and left net cash flow and liquidity guidance unchanged at that stage, Yahoo Finance reported. Whether September's reported cut changes that operating-margin range, and by how much, is not specified in the Seeking Alpha account.

The Numbers Behind the July Downgrade

Volkswagen's second-quarter net profit fell 32.9% year on year to €1.54 billion, TRT World reported. Group vehicle sales fell 9.7% to 2.04 million units while production dropped 13.4% to 2.01 million, Yahoo Finance reported — meaning sales exceeded production by about 30,000 units (2.04 million − 2.01 million), or roughly 1.5% of production ((2.04 − 2.01) ÷ 2.01 × 100 = 1.5%), our calculation from those reported figures. China deliveries plunged 36.6% to 424,300 vehicles even as North America grew 7.7%, South America 9.4% and Europe 2.5%, while overall group deliveries fell 8.6% worldwide, according to Yahoo Finance. CFO Arno Antlitz said the Chinese total market is down 20% and warned that Chinese rivals "are increasing exports and thereby competitive pressure in Europe," per the same report.

Brand Divergence and Cash Flow

Q2 2026 operating results by brand, as reported by Volkswagen and cited by Yahoo Finance.

Results diverged sharply by brand in the quarter. Porsche's operating result jumped to €692 million from €154 million a year earlier, and truck unit Traton rose to €902 million, according to Yahoo Finance's reporting of VW's disclosures. Porsche's quarterly operating result was therefore €210 million, or about 23%, below Traton's (692 − 902 = −210; −210 ÷ 902 × 100 = −23.3%), an arithmetic comparison of the two reported figures rather than a causal link, our calculation. The core Volkswagen-Škoda-Cupra group slipped to €2.07 billion from €2.34 billion. Automotive net cash flow swung to a positive €1.17 billion from an outflow of €523 million a year earlier, though Yahoo Finance noted this was mostly the result of lower investment, reduced tax payments and working-capital timing rather than underlying improvement. The net tariff hit in the first half was a small gain of €0.1 billion after offsets and reimbursements at Audi and Volkswagen, and the 2026 outlook assumes the current tariff situation holds and excludes any escalation in the Middle East, per the same report.

Management's Response: Cost Cuts and a Broader Overhaul

CEO Oliver Blume said in July that disciplined cost management had offset "unavoidable headwinds in the double-digit billions," while calling the environment "extremely challenging" and warning Volkswagen faces "an unprecedented risk scenario," per Yahoo Finance. Blume proposed doubling previously agreed job cuts to 100,000 and warned four German plants were at risk of closure after 2030, calling the plan the group's most comprehensive overhaul yet, according to Global Banking & Finance Review and TRT World. Volkswagen subsequently struck a turnaround deal with unions cutting 50,000 more jobs while sparing four German plants from closure for now, according to Reuters. Separately, Reuters reported that Volkswagen plans to cut costs by 20% across all brands by the end of 2028 to shore up its finances against higher costs, the tough China market and US tariffs.

The Volkswagen Group's Supervisory Board has unanimously approved the Executive Board's "Future Plan 2030," according to Volkswagen Group's own press materials. The plan envisions streamlining the group's global lineup by up to 50% and cutting product complexity, such as powertrain, trim and equipment combinations, by up to 75%, with the stated aim of lifting operating margins back toward the long-term 8% to 10% target, according to Yahoo Finance and Automotive News, which put the global portfolio at about 150 models. Blume pointed to more than 150 competitors in China now targeting Europe as evidence deeper cuts are needed and said he expected restructuring decisions before the end of the year, per Global Banking & Finance Review. Volkswagen also reached an agreement with the State of Lower Saxony and Aurelius Capital on the possible sale of Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH, with Aurelius as majority owner, according to Volkswagen Group press materials.

Blume framed the second quarter as evidence the overhaul is "delivering results," citing a European order book up 12% and all-electric orders up more than 50%, according to Yahoo Finance and Volkswagen's own release.

Investor and Analyst Reaction to the July Downgrade

Volkswagen shares fell by as much as 3.2% following the July results before recovering some of their losses later in the day, Global Banking & Finance Review reported. Analysts were split: Morningstar's Rella Suskin said the results suggested the business was "starting to stabilise despite a challenging backdrop," pointing to strong free cash flow, while Bernstein analysts said VW management was "trying to walk the tightrope of reassuring investors while at the same time telling its workforce that the house is on fire," calling that "an almost impossible needle to thread." No share-price reaction specific to the September guidance cut has been reported in the sources cited here.

Bottom Line

Volkswagen's profit picture has deteriorated through 2026 in stages: a July cut to revenue guidance alongside a 32.9% drop in quarterly net profit and a 36.6% fall in China deliveries, followed by a further guidance cut reported by Seeking Alpha in September that adds a Porsche AG goodwill impairment and underperforming-brand headwinds to the list of pressures. The response so far — a proposal to double agreed job cuts to 100,000, a subsequent union deal cutting 50,000 more jobs while sparing four German plants for now, a 20%-by-2028 cost target and a Future Plan 2030 aimed at halving the model lineup — suggests, on our reading of those reported measures, that management is treating the pressure as structural rather than cyclical; that is interpretation, not a company statement. The revised return-on-sales target behind September's cut and the scale of the Porsche impairment were not disclosed in the report cited.

Reducing product complexity — including the number of powertrain, trim and equipment combinations — is seen by Blume as one of the fastest ways to lower costs and lift operating margins back toward the automaker’s long-term target of 8 percent to 10 percent. VW Group declined to identify which vehicles the automaker is reviewing. But the strategy points to a gradual cull of low-volume niche products, overlapping models and expensive derivatives rather than headline-grabbing cancellations. Europe will account for part of the rationalization, according to an analysis by Automobilwoche, Automotive News Europe’s sister publication, although other regions will also contribute to halving a global portfolio of about 150 models.
