Consumer Discretionary Leads While S&P 500 Slips

Consumer Discretionary stocks had the best day of any sector on Monday, climbing while the broader market closed lower. The group's rally stood out against a session that otherwise leaned risk-off, with Technology and Energy dragging the Nasdaq and S&P 500 into the red even as the Dow managed a gain.

The divergence told the real story of the day. Cyclical and defensive groups finished in front while the technology complex lagged, a split visible in the gains posted by Consumer Discretionary, Financials, and Materials against a declining Technology sector.

Investors appeared to be repositioning ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections, a vote CNBC noted has historically preceded strong S&P 500 performance regardless of the outcome. That same CNBC report quoted Jim Reid, Deutsche Bank's global head of macro and thematic research, who wrote that "seasonality isn't destiny, and worries around Iran, AI and France won't mysteriously vanish" once the ballots are counted.

The split scorecard was the clearest sign of the day's rotation. The Dow finished higher even as both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed lower, a combination that tends to show up when a heavier cyclical and value weighting offsets losses concentrated in a handful of mega-cap names.

Crypto did not escape the risk-off mood either, with Bitcoin and Ethereum both lower in the snapshot above. Separately, Reuters reported early Monday that bitcoin was steadying after a recent crypto theft while the dollar declined ahead of the midterms.

Technology was the weakest sector outside of Energy, and the session coincided with Apple's earnings day. CNBC reported that Apple shares slipped on Monday just as the company and Nvidia sat neck and neck for the title of world's most valuable company, with Barclays staying underweight the stock on "iPhone uncertainties this cycle" and "limited monetization of AI."

Reuters separately reported that October's dive in AI-related shares is testing the broader market's resilience, a backdrop that may have weighed on chip and software names beyond Apple itself. Energy brought up the rear by a wide margin, and Reuters reported that oil fell as the dollar declined ahead of the midterms.

The gains in Financials, Materials, and Consumer Staples looked like a value-and-defensive shuffle. It is the kind of move that can show up when traders want less exposure to richly valued growth names heading into an uncertain week.

Looking Ahead

There is no economic calendar entry to flag for Tuesday, but the midterm elections themselves are effectively the day's main event. CNBC's historical analysis found the S&P 500 was up after all 11 midterms from 1982 through 2022, though the same piece noted that short-term returns were less reliable. Societe Generale, cited in that report, argues Federal Reserve policy and the corporate earnings cycle ultimately matter more than elections.

Markets will also be watching whether Tuesday's results shift control of Congress. CNBC reported that a Democratic win in either chamber could grant the party new leverage to investigate companies, with industries such as defense, healthcare, banking, and artificial intelligence in focus. Congressional document requests have already surfaced, including a Senate subcommittee request tied to donors to the White House ballroom project.

Divided government has historically coincided with stronger average returns than one-party control, according to the Morgan Stanley analysis cited by CNBC, though Morgan Stanley's Ariana Salvatore cautioned that the pattern may not hold this time. Whether the Consumer Discretionary strength seen Monday can hold through the vote, or whether Technology finds its footing after the AI-driven wobble, remains an open question for the rest of the week.
