Energy Leads While S&P 500 Slips

Technology stocks took the hit on Friday, and they took it hard. The sector's drop was the steepest of any group tracked today, and it dragged the Nasdaq Composite down with it while money rotated into safer corners of the market like consumer staples and utilities.

The selling started with earnings. CNBC reported that Amazon's third-quarter earnings and revenue fell short of Wall Street's expectations and that the company posted a steep negative free cash flow figure while maintaining its 2026 capital spending forecast.

Intel fared worse, sliding sharply after issuing a weak outlook tied to a slowdown in PCs, according to CNBC. Chipmakers broadly got swept up in the retreat, and the pressure bled into the broader AI trade that's defined most of October's trading.

Every major index was lower in the late-session snapshot, and the Nasdaq's drop outpaced the other benchmarks by a wide margin. The Dow held up relatively better, cushioned by the same defensive names that led sector gains elsewhere. Bitcoin and Ethereum also slipped.

Technology was the clear laggard of the session, and it wasn't close. CNBC reported that chipmakers including Advanced Micro Devices, Nvidia, and Broadcom all fell as investors rotated out of AI-linked names, while Seeking Alpha reported that storage maker Seagate Technology got dragged down in the same retreat.

On the other end, Energy led the board even as broader equities sold off, and defensive sectors like Consumer Staples and Utilities caught the rotation money. CNBC reported that Walmart, Coca-Cola, and Procter & Gamble all advanced, which lines up with staples outperforming every sector but energy.

The split tells a simple story: traders weren't buying the whole market, they were buying safety and selling names tied to AI infrastructure spending. Globalt's Keith Buchanan told CNBC the market has turned "scrutinizing" and "discerning" about how AI investment works in real-world terms, including how it gets financed and who captures the economics, which lines up with the sector gap seen today.

Today's Economic Releases

Time Event Impact
08:30 ET PCE Price Index (Sep) HIGH

The September PCE Price Index was on the calendar for 8:30 a.m. ET, ahead of the opening bell. Whatever the print showed, it does not appear to have been the main driver of today's moves: the news coverage pointed instead toward Amazon, Intel, and the broader AI capital spending debate as the forces behind the selling.

Looking Ahead

Friday wrapped up a rough month for the AI trade, and CNBC's outlook piece for the coming week flagged that the pressure isn't fully resolved. Apple and Palantir Technologies are among the 138 S&P 500 companies set to report next week, and CNBC noted that poor results from the hyperscalers, including Alphabet and Amazon, raise the stakes for Apple.

BTIG's Jonathan Krinsky told CNBC that the S&P 500 is vulnerable to a sell-off and that he thinks the index will soon test its 200-day moving average, though that outcome is far from guaranteed.

The US midterm elections also land on Tuesday. CNBC reported that investors are not too worried the vote will do much to move a market still pinned to the AI trade and incoming earnings, but a shift in congressional control could carry longer-run implications for areas like defense spending, pharmaceutical pricing, and data center regulation.

Expect Technology to stay under the microscope next week as traders wait to see whether Apple's results can steady a sector that just posted the session's steepest decline.
