Microsoft has opened preorders for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a new consumer laptop built around an Nvidia AI chip, with pricing starting at $2,599 and shipments set to begin Oct. 16. Microsoft executive vice president of Windows and devices Pavan Davuluri announced the device at a company event in San Francisco on Wednesday, according to CNBC. The launch marks one of Nvidia's most direct pushes yet into consumer Windows hardware.

What Microsoft is selling

According to CNBC's reporting on Microsoft's event remarks, the Surface Laptop Ultra has a 15-inch display and weighs 4.4 pounds. The configuration can include up to 128 gigabytes of unified memory and is said to supply up to one petaflop of computing power. Microsoft also says the laptop includes what it describes as the world's first magnetic USB-C port, similar in function to Apple's MagSafe charging connector, alongside two additional standard USB-C ports, per a Microsoft blog post cited by CNBC.

At the center of the machine is Nvidia's Blackwell RTX Spark GPU. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, speaking at the event, said the chip has as much processing power as Nvidia's DGX-1 data center server from 2016, which he said cost $250 million, according to CNBC's account of his remarks. That comparison came from Huang rather than from an independent benchmark, and CNBC did not report a verified performance test behind it.

On-device AI and coding agents

During the demonstration, a presenter showed how applications on the Surface Laptop Ultra can route some AI coding requests to the laptop's local GPU, flagged with a green leaf icon, while sending other requests to the cloud, CNBC reported. Microsoft also said that through Windows 11, developers can confine coding agents to what the company calls Microsoft Execution Containers, intended to prevent those agents from making unwanted changes elsewhere on the system. Microsoft is additionally updating the Windows 11 setup process to help users get started with OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent tool, according to the same report.

CNBC also reported that users can install and run a variety of AI models directly on the device without the recurring cloud costs that typically come with heavy model usage, part of a broader industry push by Microsoft, Apple and Google to move more AI workloads onto local hardware rather than remote servers. Separately, Davuluri said at the event that Meta will bring a version of its Muse AI agent to Windows, a move CNBC linked to Muse's recent rise to the top of Apple's App Store, surpassing ChatGPT.

Interpretation: if local GPU inference genuinely offloads a meaningful share of coding and model-serving tasks from the cloud to the device, as the demonstration CNBC described suggested, that could in principle reduce per-user cloud inference costs for the subset of workloads handled locally. Neither CNBC nor Seeking Alpha quantified how much Azure demand or Copilot cloud usage this might shift, and Microsoft did not offer that breakdown in the remarks CNBC reported.

Positioning against Apple, and a smaller sales footprint

Microsoft executives said the new Surface laptops top the performance of Apple's MacBooks, according to Seeking Alpha — a company claim that Seeking Alpha did not report as independently benchmarked.

CNBC noted a structural limit on how much any single Surface launch can move Microsoft's overall hardware business: while Windows remains the most widely used PC operating system, Microsoft itself is not among the top six PC vendors by unit shipments, according to a Gartner estimate cited in CNBC's report. That context suggests the Surface Laptop Ultra is better read as a showcase for Nvidia silicon and Microsoft's hybrid local-cloud AI strategy than as a volume hardware play in its own right.

From Copilot+ PCs to the Surface brand

The launch follows Microsoft's 2024 Copilot+ PC standard, which required devices to include neural processing units capable of a minimum level of on-device AI performance. CNBC reported that a Microsoft spokesperson said the company has since "simplified product naming to lead with the Surface brand, while continuing to deliver premium hardware and hybrid AI experiences." CNBC also reported that Microsoft first discussed the Surface Laptop Ultra in May and is only now providing specifics, and that Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach wrote on X after the announcement, "Microsoft might get me back to Windows."

Bottom line: Per CNBC and Seeking Alpha, Microsoft has priced the Nvidia Blackwell-powered Surface Laptop Ultra from $2,599 with shipments starting Oct. 16, pairing on-device AI features with Windows 11 controls for coding agents. CNBC's citation of a Gartner estimate that Microsoft is not among the top six PC vendors by unit shipments suggests the launch reads more as a signal of Microsoft's hybrid local-cloud AI direction than as a near-term hardware volume driver.
