Technology Leads While S&P 500 Advances
Technology stocks pulled the market higher on Wednesday, while Communication Services finished as the weakest of several sector groups in the red. Leadership was clear by the end of the session: chipmakers, software names and the broader AI trade did the heavy lifting, and the stocks tied to streaming, search and media simply couldn't keep pace.
The split showed up across every major index. All four benchmarks finished higher, with the Nasdaq Composite out front on the strength of its tech-heavy makeup.
Bitcoin and Ethereum also joined the risk-on move, climbing alongside equities rather than trading as a hedge against them. That kind of correlation, stocks and crypto rising together, tends to show up on days when investors are leaning into growth rather than ducking for cover.

Every major benchmark finished the session in positive territory, and the small-cap Russell 2000 joined the advance even if it trailed the mega-cap-heavy Nasdaq. Breadth looked healthy on the surface, but the sector table below tells a more lopsided story.
Sector Performance
Technology sat atop the leaderboard, and the AI theme ran through much of the day's news flow. CNBC reported that Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley are having a record year in equities trading, driven in large part by what the piece called the AI mega trade and a surge in financing demand from hedge funds amplifying bets on chip suppliers, hyperscalers and AI hardware.
That same CNBC report sits alongside the showing from Financials, which also landed in the top half of the table: Goldman's equities financing activities jumped sharply in the third quarter to a record, and JPMorgan CFO Jeremy Barnum agreed with an analyst's description of "insatiable demand for capital" tied to AI. Industrials finished second on the day.
Communication Services brought up the rear by a wide margin. Real Estate and Consumer Staples also finished lower, which fits a day where money moved toward growth and away from defensive, rate-sensitive corners of the market.
The sector's laggard status stood out given how much AI-adjacent exposure sits inside index heavyweights such as Alphabet. MarketWatch reported that Polymarket traders are pricing in a small but non-zero chance that the AI bubble bursts before year's end, a reminder that enthusiasm for the trade hasn't erased all the caution sitting underneath it.
Elsewhere, CNBC reported that SpaceX shares jumped after the company posted third-quarter revenue growth that more than doubled from a year earlier, with its "Super Intelligence" AI segment expanding sharply. Elon Musk also floated the idea of a SpaceX-Tesla merger on the earnings call, saying the boards of both companies have created committees to discuss a possible consolidation.
Truist Securities analysts, cited in the same report, said the quarter supported the bull case for AI cloud providers given signs of "insatiable" demand for computing capacity. Shares of other space names, including Rocket Lab and AST SpaceMobile, also climbed.
On the macro side, Reuters reported that stocks rose globally on upbeat earnings while France's 10-year bond yield pushed higher, a detail worth watching for anyone tracking sovereign debt stress in Europe. Reuters also reported that oil prices held steady as investors weighed geopolitics against lower U.S. stockpiles, suggesting energy markets stayed in a holding pattern even as equities pushed higher.
Away from the AI trade, CNBC covered a separate story developing in tokenized stocks. Trading volume in blockchain-based versions of equities is growing fast on platforms like Robinhood Chain, but major companies including Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Alphabet and McDonald's have objected to having their shares tokenized on the OKXICE platform. It's not a story that moved Wednesday's tape directly, but it's a reminder that the plumbing underneath equity markets keeps shifting even on days when the headline numbers look straightforward.
Looking Ahead
No economic calendar entries were available for the next session in this research set, so the setup heading into Thursday leans on earnings and the AI trade's own momentum. Tesla was due to report third-quarter results after Wednesday's close, and given Musk's merger comments on the SpaceX call, traders will likely parse that report for any follow-up on the idea.
Continued strength in bank earnings and AI infrastructure spending could keep Technology and Financials in the lead, though the AI-bubble worries flagged by prediction markets remain a reason some traders may stay cautious on richly valued growth names. Whether Communication Services stays in the cellar may depend on how the market treats the next round of AI-linked earnings from the sector's biggest constituents.
