Spotify shares jumped roughly 10% on Thursday after the music streaming company reported third-quarter 2026 Premium Subscriber growth that topped its own guidance and issued fourth-quarter operating income guidance ahead of Wall Street estimates, together with a higher gross margin target. The company said Premium Subscribers reached 306 million in the quarter and Monthly Active Users climbed to 788 million, with gross margin and operating income coming in ahead of expectations. 247wallst.com reported the subscriber figure was 1 million ahead of guidance and above analyst estimates.

According to 247wallst.com, Spotify stock traded at $579.49, up 10% in morning trading, after closing at $526.08 on October 21 with an intraday range of $508.01 to $530.75. Coinpedia.org reported the stock rallied about 5% in premarket trading before the broader intraday advance, and Euronext noted shares rose more than 9% early in the session to their highest level since January. Even after the move, 247wallst.com said the stock remained down 3% year to date.

Subscriber growth tops guidance, with gains in every region

Premium Subscribers grew 9% year over year to 306 million and MAUs rose 11% year over year to 788 million, Spotify said in its shareholder letter. Co-CEO Alex Norström told investors that growth was broad-based, saying "this quarter, that growth came from every region," with the rest of the world and Latin America leading, according to 247wallst.com. The quarter brought 6 million net subscriber additions, the outlet reported.

Total revenue increased 16% year over year (14% in constant currency) to approximately €5.0 billion, Spotify said. Reporting from Coinpedia and Euronext put the more precise figure at €4.97 billion, slightly below the €4.98 billion LSEG-compiled consensus estimate. Operating income of €672 million was essentially in line with the €671.8 million analysts had expected, those outlets reported, while earnings per share of €2.48 came in below the €2.80 analyst estimate cited by Euronext — a shortfall of €0.32 a share, or about 11% (2.48 − 2.80), by our calculation.

Margins improve as Q4 profit guidance clears consensus

Gross margin improved by 136 basis points year over year to 33.0% in the third quarter, a record for the period, as Premium growth outpaced music costs, according to 247wallst.com and Spotify's own release. For the fourth quarter, management guided to a gross margin of 33.8%, a further step up even after what 247wallst.com described as initial investment in audiobooks and the Spotify Partner Program. By our calculation, that is an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the third-quarter level of 33.0% to the 33.8% guided for the fourth quarter.

Spotify also guided to fourth-quarter operating income of €820 million, above the analysts' average estimate of €813.4 million compiled by LSEG, Euronext and Coinpedia both reported. By our calculation, that guidance exceeds the consensus figure by €6.6 million, or about 0.8% (820 − 813.4). On subscribers, the company's forecast called for roughly 10 million net Premium additions in the fourth quarter to 316 million, above the 314.7 million analysts had expected, Euronext reported. The one figure that landed shy of expectations was MAUs: Spotify's fourth-quarter projection of 818 million came in marginally below the Visible Alpha estimate of 819 million, per Euronext.

Ad revenue accelerates, ARPU holds up despite price increases

According to 247wallst.com, Premium average revenue per user rose 9.3% year over year alongside the 9% subscriber growth, which the outlet said indicated recent price increases had not stalled paid sign-ups. Ad-supported revenue grew 9% at constant currency, up from 3% growth in each of the first two quarters of the year, led by automated programmatic sales, the outlet reported, adding that management expects further progress toward double-digit ad growth in the fourth quarter.

Operating expenses grew 26% year over year, outpacing revenue growth, 247wallst.com noted. Euronext reported that Spotify has said growth in operating expense peaked in the third quarter and will moderate from the fourth quarter into 2027.

AI features, audiobooks and creator tools get airtime

On the post-earnings call, Co-CEO Gustav Söderström said the "About the Song" feature was on its way to 100 million users and that almost 40 million Premium users now listen to mixed playlists, according to Euronext. Söderström also framed Spotify's broader AI positioning around third-party agents, saying: "For the agentic age, we are betting on consumers using many agents, and that Spotify will be by far the best media platform for licensed content inside and across all these agents."

Pivotal Research Group analyst Jeff Wlodarczak wrote in a note to clients, as cited by Euronext, that "we have admittedly been too cautious on AI's near-term impact, and the results show no damage so far."

Spotify's own release detailed plans to expand audiobook access from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026, reaching over 750 million people, with management crediting audiobooks with lifting acquisition, retention and active days, per 247wallst.com. The company also said it brought the Spotify Partner Program to more than 35 new markets and rolled out Memberships in 34 markets during the quarter. Earlier in the week, Euronext reported, Spotify announced a licensing deal with music distributor Believe for an upcoming paid tool for fan-made AI covers and remixes, following similar deals with Universal Music Group, Merlin and Kobalt.

Market reaction stood apart from peers

247wallst.com noted that Spotify's rally ran counter to its sector: Sirius XM Holdings shares traded at $26.85, down 0.4%, the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR ETF fell 1%, and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust was down 0.82%. The outlet also pointed out that Spotify has repurchased $1.1 billion in shares through October 21 to offset dilution from employee equity programs, and that the stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 49 times, which it said leaves little cushion if subscriber growth cools.

Bottom Line

Spotify's third-quarter report combined a modest subscriber beat with fourth-quarter operating income guidance of €820 million that cleared the €813.4 million consensus compiled by LSEG, plus a gross margin target of 33.8% against 33.0% in the quarter, and investors rewarded the stock with a roughly 10% one-day gain even as third-quarter revenue and earnings per share landed below analyst estimates. Reading those figures together — an interpretation, not a forecast — the next test is whether accelerating ad revenue, continued ARPU gains and the moderation in expense growth that management has signaled can sustain margin expansion into 2027, with 247wallst.com noting the shares trade at 49 times earnings.
