Lockheed Martin lifted its 2026 sales and cash flow guidance for a second time this year after third-quarter revenue climbed 11% to $20.7 billion and backlog surged to a record $292 billion, driven largely by missile and air-defense demand, according to a TradingView report citing Seeking Alpha and Defence Industry Europe.

Earnings Beat Across the Board

Lockheed reported third-quarter earnings of $7.97 a share, topping the analyst consensus of $7.52, while revenue of $20.7 billion exceeded the $20.46 billion consensus, per TradingView. Net income rose to $1.85 billion, or $7.97 a share, from $1.62 billion, or $6.95 a share, a year earlier, a 14% increase that Defence Industry Europe said reflected sales growth across all four business segments.

Total operating profit rose 7% to $2.44 billion from $2.28 billion, while business segment operating profit increased 10% to $2.23 billion, a roughly $200 million gain that TradingView and Defence Industry Europe attributed primarily to higher missile production and increased aircraft sales. Chief Executive Jim Taiclet said each of the company's four segments posted year-over-year growth, with sales topping $20.7 billion and net earnings exceeding $1.8 billion, according to Defence Industry Europe.

Cash generation told a more mixed story in the quarter itself. Cash from operations declined to $3.44 billion from $3.73 billion, and free cash flow fell to $3 billion from $3.35 billion, which the company attributed primarily to higher customer receipts in the year-earlier period, per TradingView.

Guidance Raised for the Second Time

Despite the quarterly cash flow dip, Lockheed raised its full-year outlook. The 2026 sales forecast moved to approximately $80 billion to $82 billion from a prior range of $79.75 billion to $81.75 billion, compared with Wall Street's consensus estimate of $81 billion, TradingView reported. Full-year free cash flow guidance was lifted to $7.8 billion to $8 billion from $7 billion to $7.2 billion, and cash-from-operations guidance rose to $10 billion to $10.2 billion from $9.2 billion to $9.4 billion, per the same report.

The upgrade builds on a trajectory outlined earlier in the year. A July 2026 employer-profile analysis from Built In noted that Q1 2026 multiyear munitions framework agreements and a plan to more than triple annual PAC-3 interceptor output anchored production plans when backlog stood at $193.6 billion to $194 billion and 2026 sales guidance was $77.5 billion to $80 billion. By the second quarter, backlog had grown to $230 billion with guidance already raised, according to a TradingKey analysis. The third-quarter figure of $292 billion represents a 27% jump from the second quarter, per TradingView.

Missiles Lead Backlog and Segment Growth

Within that record backlog, TradingView reported that $52.5 billion is associated with a multiyear contract for PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors. Using those two disclosed figures, the remainder works out to roughly $239.5 billion tied to other programs (292 − 52.5), while the total backlog sits about 456% above the PAC-3 contract portion ((292 − 52.5) / 52.5 × 100). That is a straight arithmetic comparison of the reported figures rather than a forecast; read as interpretation, it underscores how broad-based the order book has become even as missile defense remains a standout driver.

The Missiles and Fire Control segment itself was the fastest-growing unit, with sales surging 24% to $4.50 billion from $3.62 billion and operating profit climbing 24% to $631 million. TradingView and Defence Industry Europe both reported that integrated air and missile defense programs, primarily increased production of PAC-3 and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems, added $480 million in revenue, while GMLRS and Precision Strike Missile programs contributed another $330 million.

Aeronautics, the company's largest segment, posted a 13% revenue increase to $8.21 billion, with operating profit up 9% to $743 million. Higher F-35 production and sustainment activity added $710 million, and the C-130 transport program contributed $270 million more, partly offset by a $130 million decline in F-16 revenue tied to lower production volume and unfavorable profit adjustments, per TradingView.

A Proposed Decade-Long F-35 Framework

Alongside results, Lockheed announced a framework agreement with the U.S. government covering 10 years of F-35 production and maintenance, encompassing 850 aircraft for the U.S. military plus international orders, spare parts and modifications, TradingView reported. The arrangement calls for continued annual output of 156 aircraft, including those for foreign customers, but remains subject to congressional authorization, funding and negotiation of final contract terms, pricing and delivery schedules. A statement from Lockheed Martin's newsroom said multiyear F-35 production and sustainment "strengthens the supply chain, saves billions in taxpayer dollars and improves fleet readiness."

The company spent $439 million on capital expenditure and $599 million on independent research and development during the quarter, according to Defence Industry Europe.

Geopolitical Backdrop

The results landed amid heightened geopolitical tension. CNBC's Oct. 21 market coverage reported that oil prices jumped after The New York Times, citing sources, said the U.S. and Israel have plans for renewed strikes against Iran following next month's midterm elections, with Brent crude trading 3% higher above $112.45 a barrel. That report speaks to the broader security environment in which demand for missile defense systems is unfolding, though it is separate from Lockheed's own disclosed commentary on order drivers.

Bottom Line

Lockheed Martin's third-quarter results show a defense contractor whose missile and air-defense business is expanding faster than its legacy aircraft programs, with backlog growth outpacing even the raised sales guidance. The proposed decade-long F-35 framework, if finalized, would lock in production visibility, but TradingView reported that it remains dependent on congressional authorization, funding and contract negotiations, meaning the upside embedded in the raised guidance is not yet fully secured.
