Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale globally on Friday, October 23, 2026, starting at $1,999 in the United States, according to Apple's September product announcement. In Beijing, the launch drew queues outside Apple's Sanlitun flagship store and scalpers offering buyers extra cash on the spot for their newly purchased units, CNBC reported.

Scenes From Beijing's Sanlitun Store

About 100 people lined up at the Sanlitun location, with the first customer, Apple fan Mary Tong, arriving at 6 a.m. to collect a pre-booked device, CNBC reported. Outside the store, a scalper named Alex Wang told CNBC he was offering buyers an extra 3,000 Chinese yuan, or roughly $448, to hand over their newly purchased phones immediately. Wang attributed the premium to constrained supply rather than durable demand, telling CNBC, "I feel the Duo can be sold with a higher price for half a month. The main reason is the tight supply."

Apple had said in advance that the Duo would not be available for walk-in purchase on launch day in mainland China and would be "limited" in other countries, per CNBC's reporting. Each online purchase was restricted to two phones. One would-be buyer in Beijing, Zhang Zheng, told CNBC he was discouraged from ordering online by a delivery timeline that stretched to January 2027 — a single shopper's account, and the clearest lead-time indication in CNBC's reporting, rather than a figure disclosed by Apple.

What $1,999 Buys

Apple's pricing starts at $1,999 for the base model, or $83.29 per month over 24 months, covering 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options, according to Apple's newsroom post. The device ships in star white and night sky, with a companion case priced at $79 and a folio with kickstand at $129.

Opened, the Duo carries a 7.6-inch inner display, and Apple says the device in that configuration is the thinnest iPhone ever, with a nano-texture finish designed to minimize glare. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple said. By our calculation, based on Apple's own figures, the inner display is 2.2 inches larger on the diagonal than the outer display, a 40.7 percent difference ((7.6 − 5.4) ÷ 5.4 × 100). Apple also says the hinge is engineered from more than 100 components, and that the device is made with 35 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled titanium in the 3D-printed hinge cover.

On battery life, Apple states the Duo delivers up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, up to 44 hours using the outer display, and up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally. Our calculation, using Apple's figures, shows inner-display playback runs 13 hours shorter than outer-display playback (31 − 44), a 29.5 percent difference measured against the 44-hour figure ((31 − 44) ÷ 44 × 100). Interpretation: that spread is consistent with the larger inner canvas drawing more power, though Apple does not itemize the cause.

Apple framed the Duo as a generational step at announcement. "With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what's possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone," Apple CEO John Ternus said in the company's newsroom post.

A Crowded Foldable Field in China

China represents the single largest foldable smartphone market globally, even though the category remains a niche worldwide, according to Counterpoint Research cited by CNBC. Apple's domestic rivals moved first. Huawei, which already has a broad lineup of foldables, introduced its Mate XT2 trifold, priced at about $3,000, on September 7, two days before Apple's own Duo announcement, CNBC reported. Xiaomi unveiled its own pricey foldable, the 18 Fold, around the same time. Interpretation: the sequence places Apple in a segment where Chinese manufacturers already have established lineups, and where Huawei's trifold sits roughly $1,000 above the Duo's $1,999 starting price.

AI Features Still Catching Up in Two Key Markets

The Duo's rollout also highlights gaps in Apple's AI ambitions outside the U.S. In China, Apple said a localized version of Apple Intelligence is set to enter beta testing this month, with features including live translation, Clean Up in photos and writing tools, according to the company's statement cited by CNBC. Separately, Beijing approved Alibaba AI models for use in the Duo and other Apple devices on October 14, part of Apple's pending AI rollout in the country, CNBC reported. Chinese state media cited former CEO Tim Cook during a recent China trip as saying Apple's revamped Siri AI would not yet be available there.

In the European Union, Apple's own newsroom post states that Siri AI will not be available initially on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, along with any features that depend on it, meaning EU buyers face a comparable AI limitation to China at launch, though for different regulatory reasons.

Bottom Line

The visible signals from launch day, capped online orders, walk-in restrictions in mainland China, a January 2027 delivery estimate cited by one Beijing shopper, and a scalper actively offering $448 premiums outside a flagship store, point to constrained early supply rather than confirmed runaway demand, a distinction the scalper himself drew in comments to CNBC. With Huawei and Xiaomi already competing on price and features in China's foldable market, and with Apple's AI assistant still rolling out unevenly in China and the EU, the Duo's first weeks will be defined as much by how quickly Apple can restock as by how many units actually sell.
