The headline figure came in at 7.4 million – in line with expectations but below last month’s figure of 7.6 million.

However, hiring also increased and layoffs remained subdued.

For the past couple of months, most indexes have been on a “breather”.

It’s not surprising that many were waiting for this breather to turn into a breakdown.
